Jimmy Earl McElreath lived in Arlington, TX his entire life. He was born February 18, 1928 and passed away peacefully at home May 18, 2017. His loving wife Shirley was by his side.
He was son of Laurence "Rooster" and Mary Belle. His father died when Jimmy was 14. Jimmy joined the Merchant marines at age 16 and crossed the ocean three times by age 17. He was a bricklayer by trade, driving dirt cars on weekends. Jimmy had aspirations of driving in the Indianapolis 500 and that dream came true. He raced in 15 Indy 500's and was named Rookie of the Year in 1962 as a result of a 6th place finish. One of his greatest racing accomplishments was in 1970 when he won the first California 500, at Ontario Motor Speedway, driving for A.J. Foyt. Jimmy was inducted into the Sprint Car Hall of Fame, Texas Motor Speedway Hall of Fame and Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame.
Throughout the years Jimmy enjoyed racing, drinking beer, traveling and spending time at the lake house, all with Shirley by his side. I guess you could say that both Jimmy and Shirley lived life in the fast lane.
Jimmy is survived by his wife Shirley, granddaughters, Bryn and Taryn Bettenhausen, and great granddaughter, Kendyl Bettenhausen. He was preceded in death by his son James in 1977 and his daughter Shirley Anne Bettenhausen in 2000.
We would like to thank Heritage Hospice personnel, along with caregivers Betty Elkins, Jackie Booe and Lisa Rivera for all their wonderful care for Jimmy and Shirley.
